About the Locomotive
This train is due to be hauled by Western Class 52 locomotive, D1015 ‘Western Champion’, courtesy of the Diesel Traction Group (DTG). (subject to availability)
Built in 1963 at the then British Railways Swindon Works, this locomotive initially spent its working life operating the main lines radiating from London to Cornwall, West Wales, the Midlands and the North West. In 1965, she had the honour of hauling the return working of Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral train.
Withdrawn from traffic in 1976, the locomotive was bought by the DTG in 1980, securing its preservation. Now based at the SVR, the locomotive last ran with Vintage Trains in 2013.
