FAREWELL TO STEAM SPECIAL

On 27th November 1965, 7029 ‘Clun Castle’ hauled the Farewell to Steam special out of London Paddington, marking the end of Western Region steam under British Railways and shortly before Clun herself entered preservation.

For just the second time since 1965, Clun Castle returns to Paddington station and on the 1st November this year Clun will, for the first time in 60 years, haul a train out of the station and embark on a journey recreating that rail tour from 1965.

Steaming out of Paddington, the train will follow the Great Western Mainline across the country past the locomotives birthplace of Swindon to Bristol Temple Meads where there will be a short break. From here the train continues along the route from 1965, as closely as can be done in 2025, through Gloucester before continuing northwards to Birmingham, Widney Manor and journey’s end.

This will be our final special train as part of our celebrations of Railway 200 and one of the last opportunities to travel behind Clun Castle on the mainline before she is withdrawn from traffic. What better way then, than to celebrate this fantastic loco, her 75th birthday and steam on the mainline than by seeing Clun Castle departing Paddington at the head of a train for the first time in 60 years!
