Cumbrian Express – Saturday 7th April 2018

Our day begins with an early morning departure from Tyseley Warwick Road behind our BR two-tone green Class 47 “The Queen Mother” that will whisk us through the East Midlands, Derbyshire, South, West and thence North Yorkshire where at Hellified, we exchange our heritage diesel for more traditional and fitting steam on loan from the former LMS Motive Power Depot Carnforth: 10A.

Once underway, we depart Hellified towards Settle and begin the climb, crossing the Ribblehead Viaduct, enjoying the majestic wonderment of the surroundings. The Settle & Carlisle line is known for its magnificent scenery and steep gradient so our engine will be working hard as we climb to the magnificent Ribblehead Viaduct with stunning views of the three peaks. Passengers get a marvellous view down Dent Dale as the train emerges from Blea Moor tunnel and approaching Garsdale you will see sweeping views of Wensleydale – with our engine in full flight we climb at 1 in 100 towards the summit of the line at Ais Gill. There will be a photo stop at Appleby for the passengers to take some memorable snap-shots of the loco as we take water before travelling on through the lush Eden Valley to the historic border city of Carlisle. Passengers can alight at Appleby for tours of the lake district, or continue onward to Carlisle. We plan to stop of up to three hours, allowing time for the passengers to indulge in the delights of the city whilst the crews service and turn the loco. You may choose to stroll between the castle and cathedral or perhaps visit the famous Tullie House Museum – all surrounded by great places to shop, eat or be entertained so creating the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Carlisle Cathedral

After the short break, we begin our return journey, retracing our steps over the Settle & Carlisle route in reverse, again stopping for water at Appleby. Our steam locomotive leaves us at Hellifield and is relaced by our heritage diesel for the journey back to Tyseley.

Commencing at Tyseley Warwick Road platform, the train picks up at Coleshill Parkway, Tamworth, Burton-upon-Trent, Derby, Chesterfield and Swinton. Passengers can alight at either Appleby or Carlisle.
