Chester Venturer with No. 45596 'Bahamas' - Saturday 20th July

This railtour sees newly overhauled No. 45596 ‘Bahamas’ back on home territory, on the West Coast Mainline, sprinting from Wolverhampton to Crewe, then turn west towards our destination, the Cathedral City of Chester. We believe this will be the first time 'Bahamas' has departed Birmingham New Street in over 50 years!

Chester, apart from having one of the most spectacular cathedrals in the country, is a classic, contemporary city bursting with must see treasures, 2000 years of history and spectacular shopping. From the City Walls, dating back to the Roman occupation, the 1000-year-old Chester Cathedral and the Eastgate Clock, one of the most photographed in the world, Chester is steeped in history for you to discover.

Our return traverses the famous Chirk Viaduct, then takes us along the route of the Shrewsbury, Oswestry & Chester Junction Railway formed in 1845.

Of this railway, Bradshaw writes,

‘To the tourist, this line of railway holds out peculiar attractions. The Vale of Gresford, the grounds of Wynnstay, the valley of the Dee and the vale of Llangollen, offer some of the most beautiful views, unsurpassed for grandeur and picturesque effect. Here Cambria discloses herself between the mountains of Trevor and Berwyn, and by her own sacred Dee, the happy valley which leads to the scenes of the richest beauty, where amidst her mountains and lakes she reveals in all her splendour of rocks, woods and streams.’

Please note: Due to the length of the journey, dining is not available for passengers joining or alighting at Wolverhampton.
